To provide an accurate treatment proposal and a treatment estimate, each work of art needs to be thoroughly examined.
During treatment our main aim is to return work as close to the artist's intention whilst importantly, retaining the patina of age. Retouchings, if applicable, are carried out with minimal intervention and we avoid covering any of the original surface.
All interventions of our practice made upon the artistic works obey restoration ethical principles:
- Minimal intervention principle;
- Respect to the original parts of an artwork;
- Interventions are performed strictly within the lacunas boundaries without covering the original surfaces;
- Use of the reversible, durable, long-term stability, high quality materials, easily reversible and compatible with the original artwork;
- As much as possible avoiding the synthetic materials and using the natural origin ones, prepared in the studio (for instance: fish glue for canvas lining, gelatin for strengthening of the paint layer, dammar varnish for general and final varnishing, wax for edges lining, etc.).
The work stages for restoring an artwork are the following:
- Examining work's manufacturing technique with normal and radiant illumination, ultraviolet radiation;
- Drafting an observation file on the painting conservation status with mentioning of the deteriorations, as well as propositions for intervention;
- Some preliminary tests in certain situations – samples of solubility, fillers removal, tests for strengthening in order to establish the optimal methods and materials for intervention;
- For special works, requiring detailed studies, there are physical – chemical tests to be performed in cooperation with certified conservators or with certified experts and investigators from the Romanian National History Museum, the National Center for Physical – Chemical and Biological Investigations and Researches: microscopic examinations and analyses, spectrometry by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray diffraction X (XRD), Fourier transformed infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray radiography, sampling for establishing the nature of the pigments, stratigraphy, etc.;
- Evaluation of the restoration costs, and of the performing time, notifying the beneficiary of the estimate costs;
- Any restored work has attached a report where all performed operations are recorded; there is also a CD with images, essential aspects and restoration stagers, as well as recommendations for preservation, maintaining and maintenance of the work of art in good conditions.
